Greta: What cat breed is generally the most friendly?
I have two cats that I rescued from shelters (shorthair mix and siamese mix). I love them both to pieces, but they’re both incredibly mean. They bite and scratch and hiss at everything and they HATE to be picked up.
I’m thinking about getting another cat (like from a cat breeder this time) and I want to get a friendly cat that likes to be held. Any suggestions?
No, I don’t think that a cat has to come from a breeder to be friendly. I just wanted to try something different. I’ve met some cats from shelters that are really sweet.

Maine Coons are known as the “gentle giants” and possess above-average intelligence, making them relatively easy to train They are known for being loyal to their family, and cautious — never mean — around strangers, but are independent and not clingy. The Maine Coon is generally not known for being a “lap cat” but their gentle disposition makes the breed relaxed around dogs, other cats, and children. They are playful throughout their lives, with males tending to be aloof and females generally possessing more dignity. They are a wonderful pet and I would highly recommend them.

American Curl.
Siamese are famous for being nasty. Not all are, but as a breed, they’re pretty bad. Of course, ANY shelter animal is a gamble. They are often there because a previous owner didn’t want them.
Answer by BozemaActually I went to the shelter and picked the friendliest adult cat I could find. I literally chose on the basis of how they behaved, not how they looked.
Different cat breeds have different personalities but each is an individual and getting a certain breed is no guarantee the cat will be friendly. And in reality there are tons of really friendly mixed breed cats in shelters. You just have to choose the right cat.
On the first post – Maine Coons are known for outgoing personalities but they can also be a bit over-aggressive in their play and sometimes with other cats and people. My in-laws have a Maine Coon – he has a great personality but he also badly bit a pet sitter on one occasion because she tried to pick him up to get him inside the house and he didn’t want to go.
Answer by William EPersians are pretty docile. But the hair is a nightmare to deal with. You have to brush them daily or the get matted. I would recommend going to your local animal shelter and just find one that is laying there being mellow. They usually have a room where you can visit with the animal. It’s tough to go by a particular breed as they each have their own individual personality. All you can do is find one that already has the personality you want.Answer by cremeyhoho114
it depends on the cat not the breed you can never tell if a cat is mean or not by looking at the breeds! just like ppl! you cant judge a book by its cover!Answer by Michelle E

its not so much what type of breed they are its more of how they were treated as a kitten. their adult lifes are molded from their kittenhood apparently. lol i read it in a cat book. like my cat is mean to other people and im thinking she was treated badly obviously because i found her on the side of a freeway. my old cat was the bees knees because he grew up in a loving home =]Answer by amandamarie.adams
Main Coons are very friendly. Their coat can take a bit to maintain since they have so many layers and as well if you live in a really warm climate they might not be too happy. Rag dolls are very cuddly, they aren’t called rag dolls for no reason, they almost literally go limp when you pick them up. They have a medium length coat and so they’d be easier to maintain grooming wise. Siamese can be very friendly but tend to yowl a lot.
Your other two cats will take a while to warm up to you, I’m not sure how long you’ve had them for, but it can also just depend on the cat. When you approach a cat to pet it, you don’t want to just walk up to it abruptly like you could with dogs (at least with dogs that aren’t hostile), I like to squat down to their level, maybe kneeling on one knee, and then hold out my hand slowly and let them come and sniff it themselves, sometimes approaching them slowly. Earn their trust slowly and try not to pet their bellies if they are hostile towards you just when you try to pet them initially because that’s the most vulnerable part of their body and much trust has to be built for a cat to feel like you’re not going to hurt it like a predator or enemy would
Answer by Ąpаɔɧɘɘ ʁɒɩɴɓɵʍ’76I heard that male orange tabbies are generally friendly! I heard this from someone on here who has a male orange tabby.
But I have to agree with others you cannot really know by the breed and what have you if they are friendly or not. It depends on how they were raised, how much attention they get, etc.

Answer by Percy-and-PennySo you think a cat has to come from a breeder to be friendly? Well, you’re dead wrong. I have three cats – all adopted as adults from shelters and they’re all the sweetest, most loveable cats I’ve ever known.
It’s also not true – as someone stated – that how a cat was treated as a kitten determines how it will be as an adult. Even the most abused animals can turn into loving, sweet pets. Mocha, my Ragamuffin, was tormented horribly by a three year old child and was TERRIFIED when I first got her. I couldn’t touch her face, paws or pick her up. A few months later she was throwing herself at my feet and now will lay on her back on my lap while I trim her claws.
How were these cats when you met them at the shelter? Did you interact with them out of their cages? And have they had other pets or small children around to irritate them? There has to be more to this story.
