SCC: How do I get my cat to stop killing birds?
I have a cat that keeps getting outside even though we try not to let her out. The problem is that our cat likes to hunt birds. We have two cats and our outdoor cat is fine. But our indoor cat seems to feel she has to leave presents for us at our front doorstep. This morning, I had to dispose of 3 more dead birds.
With my work schedule, I’m not home much, and I’m sick and tired of cleaning up dead birds on my front doorstep. She doesn’t even eat them, she’s just killing them!
Anyone else get their cat to stop this behavior?
When you have your hands full of items when you go in and out of the house, it’s not always possible to grab a small cat that can run between your legs.

Be more careful and make sure the cat doesn’t get out of the house.. It’s a cat, it’s not hard..
Have you tried a bell on her collar?
Some cats learn to move so that the bell doesn’t jingle, so you may have to have more than one bell, or change the collar every so often.
Consider “cat proofing” your yard (or a small portion where they can be confined) so that the cats can’t get out and the birds can’t get in. Mesh and chicken wire is available at DIY stores, it’s not expensive.
Deter birds from your area. There are fake owls that keep birds away. DIY stores have other methods as well, ask there. Obviously you shouldn’t have a birdfeeder out, and talk to your neighbors about theirs. Maybe they will quit feeding them. Probably not, but it’s worth a try.Answer by bilsen.gamze

Domestic cats are the number one killer of song birds in the US. Be as careful as possible to keep your cat inside.Answer by Charlie L
Cats are hunters, it’s instinct. If you don’t want the indoor cat to leave you it’s share of the bringing in the family food, make sure it doesn’t get out. Cats can be ingenious, but you must pay attention to those entering and exiting the home, as to not let it out.Answer by 2littleiggies

Cats understand you, your language. Discuss this with her with dramatic lament and revulsion in your voice. This is the only instance in which I believe pouring the shame of it all onto her pointed little head is appropriate. If she loves you, she will not cause you such disharmony any more. This is such terribleness when a domesticated cat kills wantonly. They are greater beings than such meaningless savagery. They know better than to terrorise their neighborhoods. Let her know how how horribly disappointed in her you are. She may desire compromise. My fat black cat cruelly murdered, and I mean plain murdered, tiny hummingbirds. I discussed this with her and she blatantly compromised with me, asking permission if not to murder hummingbirds, would it be acceptable to kill hummingbird moths. The first year, I agreed. But, the hummingbird moth slaughter was growing intolerable. The next spring, my cat murdered her first moth and, when she sensed my dismay, she dropped it in disgust and never harmed another living thing, not even a chipmonk we named Osama who moved in with us one bitter winter, though, I wish she would have because Osama chewed through about $ 5000 worth of my dress clothes all winter, unbeknownst to me until too late. I foundered him with sunflower seeds, unintentionally, of course.Answer by martin e
You need to make sure you cat doesn’t get out. I don’t know why you have an indoor and outdoor cat. Either keep the both in or both out.
But the killing bird problem. Cats domesticate or wild are still natural born huntes and killers. If your cat is outside it’s natural instinct will take over and it will kill birds.
Cats will always see themselves as the ones in charge of the house. She is bringing you the birds so she can provide for you. Don’t punish her it’s not her fault…she’s just doing what comes naturally.
