Well i would look in to the BARF diet, its the best for dogs. If you just want to feed regular dog food i would go with something with no fillers, bi products, corn, or wheat and the first ingredient should be meat.

Answer by Louise CI’m not sure if you get it where you live but in the UK, i use Sience Plan. Quite expensive but has everything a dog needs for glossy coat, bright eyes and healthyness all round! If you can get it i’d use that! I have a Husky/Malamute, and she looks great because of it!Answer by Alambre
Orijen is greatAnswer by luvsdard
Canidae All life stages or Nutro Natural Choice large breed puppy. Wellness puppy is great too and so is Innova, solid gold, Eagle pack, Orijen, Merrick, Blue Buffalo. The canidae is the best cause it’s great ingredients and still cheap. Go to their website and put in your zip code to see where to get it in your area. Just DON’T give him anything that comes from a grocery store or Science Diet. They’re all fillers and corn and JUNK… Go to www.dogfoodanalysis.comAnswer by kate c
Go to www.rawfed.com/myths and research about why you should question your vets nutritional advice.( atleast from what you stated in your question, your vet didn’t try and put your dog on science diet, iams or purina.)
www.bigdogsporch.com is a good forum that will allow you to chose a high quality kibble if you don’t want to go raw, but the site advocates going raw over any other diet.
If you do your research you will learn the facts behind the pet food industry, the alliances with vet associations and the common pet foods i.e. purina, iams, and hills science diet. You will also learn the facts behind the your vets education especially nutritional classes i.e. Purina combined with the american college of vet. nutrition and formed the american college of vet. nutrition curriculum, which means purina, along with other billion dollar pet food producers, are teaching vets about nutrition. (I hope you see something wrong with that.)
If you continue to look you will also learn about vaccines and how they are actually causing damage to your dogs health. My dogs are in the south and even though they don’t get flea and heartworm treatments, they are not infested. Year after year the vet tells us that he doesn’t have heartworms.
We have only had our great dane for a little over a year and he started getting peridontal disease rather quickly, but he was a stray when he went to the shelter so his teeth looked almost perfect because he was killing to eat when we got him. Thats when I started looking about dogs and their diets.
While your researching, look up about the pottenger study. It should convince you something is screwed up in the petfood/ vet industry and will allow you to see the effects of the wrong diets. after reading the study, you will understand why no one that advocates the study wants to perform one for dogs.Answer by lotsadogs
I don’t know about St B’s, but no dane puppy should EVER be fed any brand puppy food. They are very sensitive and need to be on a good quality adult food.
Nothing in a grocery store, or Walmart is a good food.
A few examples of good food are:
Eagle Pack Natural
Canidea
Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul
Innova
If you can’t find these locally, check out their web sites. If you can’t order, try to find a food locally with similar ingredients and nutrition label info.
Good luck!

Mainly, raw feeding your dog will allow you to determine the quality of dog foods that are going into your dog’s stomach and also prevent your dogs from consuming the preservatives, fillers and additives that consist in the commercial dog food.
Raw feeding your dog provides a wider range of benefits compare to commercial dog diets. You will discover that by raw feeding your dog, there will be no doggy odour, bad breath issue or gum disease! As, raw feeding will help to clean your dog teeth. Raw meaty bones help to clean dog teeth. By chewing raw food (bones) it will permit dog stomach adequate time to get the acids moving and ready for incoming food mass. Besides that, chewing bones will help to extend the eating process and reduce the possibility of your dog over eat issue! Bones chewing will also work and develop your dog neck and jaw muscle. The ripping and chewing that involved in raw meaty bones will assist the development of jaw, neck and shoulder muscles of your dog. And there are no commercial dog foods that will help in this type of muscles development.

Most of grocery store dog food formulas, like IAMS, Pedigree, Science Diet, Purina, and etc contain “meat and bone meal” which has been known to contain dead dogs and cats that were euthanized in animal shelters. Their bodies are picked up and bought by the truck load by “rendering plants” , that also pick up road kill, dead live stock, and etc. They are shredded, and boiled. They skim off the fat on the top of the “soup” and collected it and sell it to pet food companies as “animal fat”, the rest of the animals’ remains are crushed up, dried and sold to dog and cat food companies as meat and bone meal.
You can read more about it here.
Here is an article where the owner of a rendering plant talks about it. He says that cremating the dead shelter animals would cause pollution, and that rendering them is good.
Here is further information on what you shouldn’t see in the ingredients list in your dog’s food.
