Jess.: What are the chances of a horse retirement home holding a horse for a few months until I adopt?
I’m interested in a horse now but wouldn’t be able to take him until April (when my half board is up). If I offered to give them something every month to support him until I could take him and guaranteed I would adopt him, what are the chances of them holding him? He’s a 6 yr old Quarter Horse.

Probably pretty good, as long as they want to adopt him out. Be willing to sign a contract, but other than that they should keep him until you’re ready to adopt. The only way you’ll know, though, is by calling and asking them.
It’s quite possible, especially if you go ahead and complete the adoption now, then agree to “board” him there for whatever they’ll accept until April. It would depend on a lot of factors, such as the rescue’s policies, how eager they are to get horses off the property so they have room for more, etc. It definitely can’t hurt to ask.
I had a rescue hold a pony for me for almost a year at no charge, but it was a unique situation. I had owned the pony for 9 years, then sold him and lost track of him and found him at the rescue years later. When I found him, I was just about to move out of state for 10 months while my husband was sent to school. I told them I would like to take the pony back and give him a home for the rest of his life, but that I couldn’t do it until the following summer. They said no problem, he has a home here until you can take him.
