In middle school we once had a Disney-themed multicultural day and had a different Disney movie to represent each country. (Snow White for Germany, Beauty & The Beast for France, and so on.) Depending on your budget, you could do a lot of staging of various parts of the room. I would avoid cutouts of the characters but instead use the colors the characters/ Princesses are known for.
For instance, if you did an ‘Enchanted French Countryside’ for B&theB, then have silk roses that look like the ones from that movie in the decor and use lots of antique gold accents like the color of Belle’s signature dress.
Another idea would be to have an overall them of a castle decor (clock tower like Cinderella/Magic Kingdom) and Royal Carriage. Use ice blue and silver as your main colors with touches of pink. Then outside of the dance, you could have “scenes” from Disney movies to take pictures with. They could be from any of the movies, not just the fairy tales.
So for 101 Dalmations, a London scene with black and white accents or a Paris theme that looks like the Paris view from Ratatouille.
I know this all might sound a bit grand, but you can save huge by having the school art department make the majority of the backdrops, like we did in middle school.
Use the % off coupons at the craft store to buy an entire 50 yard bolt of tulle. I did this for my own wedding and paid $ 50 for 100 yards of tulle! (Should have been $ 1 a yard) Get others on your commitee to search the paper and make a buying trip. There’s always one in the Sunday paper circulars.
Finally, if you don’t have one already, request a catalog from Stumps Prom and Party. — www.stumpsprom.com — They make excellent decorations for these events and you can save even more by purchasing selections from last year’s stock.
What you do buy can be stored and used for years to come. Also, you can rent some items from your local events RentAll (like arches) and purchase only the must-haves from Stumps.
Above all, refresh your Disney movie IQ. Have a film festival with your commitee and span the genre. Not only will you fall in love with your favorites all over again, but you’ll find some new ones as well. Plus, you’ll pick up on some nuiances of Disney magic that might have eluded you at age 7 or so. Then inspiration should take hold.
Happy planning and best of luck. There’s some awesome suggestions coming in.
