sarah: wd external harddrive not showing up in “my computer”?
I have a dell desktop running Windows XP.
I also have a WD external hard drive (500gb of storage I think?), which I use as a big USB drive so I don’t have to keep lots of files on my computer and slow it down.
The other day I plugged the hard drive into my boyfriend’s computer. His laptop runs Vista, and it was having trouble recognizing the device. It started to do something (I think with the recognization of driver software) that was taking forever, so I unplugged it (stupidly).
Now when I plug the drive into my computer it makes the little “you just plugged something in” ba-ding and the device shows up in the “safely remove hardware” window, but the device doesn’t autoplay and I can’t find it under my computer.
I need the files on this disk in a very severe way. It contains EVERY single one of my photos. If you can suggest anything that might work that doesn’t involve reformatting, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Funny… I have a WD drive doing exactly the same thing. Hmm.
OK… I just opened up the case and removed the hard drive and placed it into an external Hard drive reader I have.
I noticed my drive is making scratchy noises as it starts up.
It is dead dead dead. I am lucky, because I have another backup of my data *whew
So… there is a good chance you have lost everything. Find a good computer guy in your community and verify.
Answer by Vikas MedhekarMake sure whether the external hard disk drive is installed in device manager or not. Unplug it first and then click Start and type “Device Manager”. Press ENTER. If it is listed there, right click it and select “Uninstall” option. Reboot the system for the changes to take effects. Plug it again and follow the “Add New Hardware” box or any other similar instructions on your screen.
Download Reginout registry cleaner in order to fix all the problems that found in the installation of your new external hard disk drive.
