Bunz: How long does it take to switch to intermediate ballet classes from beginning ballet class?
I’m 20 years old and I just started ballet in April. I’m obviously in beginning ballet and it seems like I’m on track. How long would it take for me to transition to intermediate classes? I love ballet but only as a hobby, not thinking about going pro or anything.

It should take about one year, more or less depending on your super ballet skills 🙂
For younger dancers, 6 to 8 years minimum, but for an adult it would be about 4 years if you trained every day.
But it really depends on the person, some people progress and pick up things faster than others. Don’t be discouraged, you should give it a try.
But also know that you don’t go straight from beginning to intermediate in the adult level, you go from;
beginning
level I
level I/II
intermediate
Besides how well you pick up on things, it will also be up to your teacher to guide you when you are ready for the next level. She will be the one who is watching you and your progress. I am 33 and started ballet in Sept. At my school I’m in the teen beginner classes, but I may be moved up next year, because I have “learned” all that class can offer me at this point. Some girls are in it for up to 3 years, some less. Remember that being older can have advantages, in that you will understand the how and why behind a move more than a 10 year old could so you will be able to make the most of your body and how to train it right. Good luck and keep dancing.Answer by dontpanic
It depends on how quickly you progress and improve posture and learn the moves, but that can be aided by taking more classes. I’m in a Beginners Ballet Class for adults and some of the other students have been there for a year or so, but they are extremely capable now. I’ve been going since January, when the new academic year started for the Academy, and we’re really stepping up the moves because most of us have had these past months to gently break us in.
I’ve snuck glances at the Intermediate Class and was awe-struck by them; I think it may take at least two years before you may confidently move up to Intermediate but I’d suggest maybe taking extra classes [I used to take three classes a week, but two is more practical] if you can or asking your teacher what you areas you can work on to improve faster.
