Kristine Mendoza_13: What does a physical exam consist of for an adolescent teenage girl?
Ok so I am starting sports and school soon so I need a physical exam. What is a basic but thorough complete physical exam? Also I ate some dry food(kisses with almonds) and now my throat feel gritty like I have to clear it all the time. Also how to doctors take blood pressure what are they hearing? And what are they feeling for with your neck.

Don’t worry about your throat being dry and gritty. They’re feeling for abnormal lumps in your throat, like something diseased. What you eat won’t affect it.
When they take blood pressure and put the stethoscope on your arm, they’re listening to your blood pump through your veins.
They’re take your blood pressure, check your height, weight, look in your ears, mouth, check your pulse, stuff like that.
Usually in a physical a female doctor will have you lay on a cot and feel your tummy for any abnormalities (like your throat). Sometimes, but mostly for teenagers, she will look at your “female parts”, just for a second to make sure nothing’s wrong.
If you need any vital shots that are required for school, they’ll give you them.
And they will prick your finger, but it doesn’t even hurt (:
Good luck, don’t worry about it, it’ll be over in a flash.
Blood pressure is a measurement of the force applied to the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps blood through the body. Think of your arteries as a pipe, if the inside is clean water can flow through easily on the other hand if theres crud and gunk on the inside it will be difficult for water to flow as freely right? Same logic applies here if your arteries lined with fat on the inside, the heart will exert more pressure to pump the blood through these “clogged” arteries. Blood pressure is not very common among kids your age though it generally starts around 30 for most people(unless you have a very stressful job and have bad eating habits). You should be fin though. They check your blood pressure put putting this velcro strap around your arm it’s like an arm float when you go swimming you know the inflatable ones. So they fill this strap with air just like an arm float and the pump the air through this little pump that measures your blood pressure. There are no needles or anything involved no blood or anything, people get it done all the time.
Now take 3 fingers and place them on the left side of your neck a little below your jaw? Do you hear something? If not put your hand over your heart, do yo hear it beating? When doctors feel your neck they are basically checking your heart beat. They are checking the number of times it beats per minute, this ensures that your heart is functioning normally and pumping blood at a steady pace, they also check the amount of time between beats. Notice when you run your heart beats faster? That is because your blood is circulating faster through your body and the heart has to pump the blood extra fast. When you’re relaxed it beats normally. Don’t worry all the doctor will do is feel your neck or wrist and check his watch to see how many times it beats per minute. They will check your weight and height, might ask you to say AAH look at your nails and eyes with a little flashlight, it’s not big deal kids get it done all the time you’ll be fine 🙂
