Show him you are serious and sign up for a photo class. You will need a 35 mm SLR with lens and that will only set him back about $ 150 if he lets you buy it on craigslist in a city near you. If you get a Nikon or Canon 35 mm camera, later once you have proved to him you are serious about photography, he may be more willing to buy you a DSLR that matches the system you will already have

Answer by G.D.You have two options. Convince your father to buy the camera or to save up money and buy one yourself. You can get an older digital camera or even film cameras through ebay, craigslist, or at a camera store. (Most stores have a used department and/or sell camera equipment on consignment on behalf of the owners.)
Here a couple of places that sell used equipment on the web:

I found a used Nikon D40 at keh for $ 215. A good starter lens, the 18-55 zoom is another $ 115. Film cameras are also available there. The only camera I would avoid is the Nikon FE (the FE-2 is fine). The Nikon FE has “issues” with the shutter mechanism and Nikon stopped making that shutter years ago so parts are very difficult to find.
If you buy an older film camera, I wouldn’t waste money on the older autofocus models. The focusing mechanism on them is slow. You can focus manually faster. Another benefit with an older camera is that you will really learn about focusing, depth of field, hyperfocal distance, and exposure much better than with an automatic camera. (Learning that stuff should show your father just how serious you are about photography.)
Once you get a camera, check into free or cheap courses taught by camera stores, community colleges, etc. Then you can take pictures at family gatherings and share them with your father.

(On my 16th birthday I got my driver’s license and my first Nikon, paid for from my savings. I was more excited about the camera.)
