Bearuh: My husband just graduated as a Geologist. How can he get a job where he will work outside?
My husband just graduated s a geologist (Bachelors degree). He just got a job with the BLM that pays very low and it looks like it is all inside paper work. He has to sit in a cubicle all day. He is a very outdoors type of person! So what sort of job or where should he apply for an outside/adventure geologist job?
Do geologists who work for oil companies work mostly outside?

I recently read an article about a shortage of Geologists in US. It also stated that it takes 10 years to train a Geologist to become expert. Then, it appears they make good money.

I’m from Australia and in the future wish to do a Bachelor of Science specializing in the environment or geology. I recently did work experience at Beverly uranium mine and traveled around the mine with the Senior Mine Environmentalist and senior geologist. It was great, they had such a varied jobs which included making sure the miners stick to the environmental guidelines, making sure the uranium did not affect the biodiversity, examining core samples and so much more. I highly recommend entering the mineral industry which can give you the opportunity to travel the world. Australian is crying out for environmentalists and geologists due to its massive mining boom. Throughout the world there are hundreds of mines therefore there are always jobs which allows you to travel and do your best to reduce the consequences of mining on the local biodiversity and find massive ore deposits.

GEOLOGIST: Salary: Graduate: AUD $ 70K. Senior: $ 120k +
ENVIRONMENTALIST: Salary: Graduate AUD $ 50K Senior: $ 80k +

My dad mangages a Major uranium mine in south australia and only seeks people who have tickets or previous experience.

There are many fields available for geologists:

1. State agencies are always looking for qualified geologists to assist in environmental compliance.

2. Environmental Consulting companies are always looking for entry level geologists to log soil samples and build monitoring wells. As long as he does not get the “I went to college for this” attitude, he will do well. Remember, a grad isn’t worth a bucket of warm spit for at least 2 years into a job.

3. The oilfield. Ahh, there is plenty of opportunity to work in the patch. Course, if he does, you will never see him as he will be working on the rigs. Talk about working outside.

The oilfield is fun, environmental is fun. State agencies are worse than the BLM.

Last option: He can get a job with an environmental drilling company.

The bad part for all these is that he will travel his #$ # off and you will only see him on weekends (unless he gets a job in the oilfield, then you will only see him about 4 days a month).

It really just depends on what kind of person he is, did he take his ASBOG? and whether or not he is lazy or not.

And if he isn’t on track for his PG, then he needs to be. A geologist without a PG is worth nothing in the world of the consultant.
