indychristine: My husband and I are considering buying a 5th wheel to live in?
We are moving back to Indiana in Oct and our home is under contract to be bought by our daughter so we are moving in with my parents until we find a place. We have been toying with the idea of buying a 5th wheel, used, at a cost of around $ 55,000 and also buying a used truck to pull it. We have done the research and my husband knows which type of truck we need. the money is not a problem, we can get the best, we have been looking and we have found some very nice higher end 5th wheels that we feel we could be very comfortable in. We can either park it at my parents house and whenever they leave town ( they are retired) we can stay in the house…OR we have an acre next to the house that our daughter is buying and we can put in a pad there and live on it. I am just trying to understand the realities of living this way. To us it sounds like something we would love. But what about winters? and can anyone think of other things that we should consider? I would appreciate any feedback!

My family lived in a 23 foot travel trailer on top of a mountain for 9 months when I was a kid – 2 adults, 2 kids, a dog and a bird! It was not for the faint of heart. Too cramped, no privacy, miserable in every possible way.
That was almost 30 years ago and I still won’t go camping to this day!
Reconsider, maybe rent a small apartment or something, you’ll be better off.
My husband & I stay in a 5th wheel 36ft 3 slide outs 8 months out of the year in Indiana (New Albany) across the river from Louisville with our dog I love it and have no problems with it we have also spent the same amount of time in a 29ft. fifth wheel 1 slide out no problems it’s all in the people and how much space you think you need, I love my 5th wheel it’s easy to keep clean and in order. We travel for work racetrack (horses) tried the apartment thing and houses for years would not go back to that either, this is more cost efficient and time efficient for us, always set and ready to go, not a lot of packing and unpacking or searching for apartments in whatever kind of area or price . Again I love it….Answer by pen411
and it’s owner:
Full time RV living.
I think the general idea is:
How much do you love your spouse?
You’ll never be more than 30′ from him/her.
How much ‘stuff’ do you think you need?
RV’s aren’t known for storage space, especially if your a packrat.
There are some RVs that are made for cold weather living, ex. Teton. The nice thing is if you get fed up with the area or climate you can just move rather then wait to sell . Nice during this iffy times. Now you will be looking at down sizing of your stuff. Just the basics. But, It can be a real nice way to live.
