they can do whatever they want as a condition of doing business with you.

They have every right to search big bulky bags walking into their place of business, so no, your premise is not ” obvious”
They can refuse you entry as well. The concession stand is where the theater makes its money. The film revenues go to the film maker.
Sneaking in food is a KILLER to the theater’s revenue, and it is a theft of their revenue, so yes… it IS “right” for them to search…
