chris: Job interview – “we’ll call YOU back”?
If, at the end of the interview, the manager says “we’ll call you back”, does that pretty much mean you can forget about that one?
Is it just a polite way of being turned down?
My friend told me this is what happened at his interview and I felt really bad for him when I heard it, because it’s the first impression I got… Probably because at my job interviews they started setting up my schedule and gave me forms and whatnot.
Thank u all for your answers!
Okay… this is my boyfriend I am talking about, and I am really worried that he was turned down for this job. He’s been looking for a job for a long time!
Of course I haven’t told him that I think he won’t get the job because I really really hope he does, and I don’t want him to give up hope, but I can’t help but feel like he was set up for disappointment.
But thanks, I will tell him to keep his eyes open! 🙂
And thanks for that website, I have something that needs to be justified myself, actually…

Follow through on what they gave you. Unless they made a commitment in writing do not hold your breath and keep looking. It is only an interview. If you do not hear in a week or so call them if you want to or just chalk it up to experience.
The other thing you could do is stop by and ask the interviewer if they have reached a decision. Be patient and not a pest.
Yes, some employers say this to be polite. They hope they get your hopes up, when they say “We’ll call you back.” I was once garanteed an interview at a Starbucks, and then they “turned me down” for a job interview. That’s a long story.
They could plan on hiring you, but then before they call you back they may change their minds. Their “second thoughts” make them hire someone else, instead of you. This happened to me about 15-20 times in the 2 years I job searched as a high school and college student.
I onced applied to work for this department store about 3 weeks before Christmas. They claimed they were hiring. They told me they would call me back in a week, when they started interviewing. I never heard a word from them.
Answer by TashJust because they said they will call you back doesn’t mean they will call you back and it doesn’t mean they won’t call you back. Nowadays when it comes to those funky managers most of the time you will NEVER, EVER know. They majority of the hiring managers nowadays and full of it.
However to some degree you do have that feeling whether or not you will be hired for the job. I mean with my job I was told that HR will be in contact with me and they never called me back a few weeks later I got another call from another location that wanted to interview me. They interview me and they liked me. I had a feeling that they were going to hire me for some reason. With the first location I went to the lady said “I’ sure HR will be in contact with you.” I already knew what that meant. I wasn’t getting the job and that was it. You never know. Just like they are exploring the possibilities you have to keep searching and explore the possibilities yourself.
You never know but don’t stop looking. Remember what they do and what they say will show you exactly how they treat people.
Best Wishes!!

Answer by Suxyou should ALWAYS follow up with an e-mail to your interviewer, basically saying “thank you for taking the time to visit with me last Thursday, regarding the opening in the Engineering Department. I was very impressed with the company and believe I would be a good fit for this position. If you have any further questions or need to contact me, I can be reached at 555-555-5555. I am very enthusiastic about employment with your company and I hope to be hearing from you soon. Thank you, ” This way, they know for sure that you are interested, and if you don’t hear from them, you can pretty much write off the job. Good luck.
