lifesong0622: Is it possible to be a decent ballet dancer even if you start as an adult?
I am 22 years old…. right now I am trying to lose weight and getting more active. My dream has always been to be a good figure skater but also to do ballet. I have been figure skating for the last 4 years off and on but have never ever done ballet. I am getting more interested in it and need some advice. What are the keys to being a good ballet dancer? How can I find a ballet school or class that will cater to adults? Do ballet schools have certain criteria for their beginner dancers? Thanks! Direct references are appreciated!

I know you’ve heard this before . . you get out of it, what you put into it. They say to fulfill your dream, live, breathe, eat, and sleep your dream. I think you could become a decent ballet dancer if you just practice everyday. You could become a very good ballet dancer of you practice every spare moment.
Just remember, you are everything you believe you are.

I have been doing ballet for about 5 years now and i love it. I started ballet in 5th grade which compared to the other girls at my studio was late. However i took two classes to get more practice and one year later i was alredy on pointe. It depends how hard u work though. there are a lot of terms and thousands of things to remember but if u really try hard u should have no problem. I can even personally tell u that u will lose the wieght. Dont take this the wrong way but i doubt u will ever be on pointe or be good enough to be in a show if that is what you are looking for. Dancers and ballerinas body are actually formed differently than other peoples. When you are a kid and you dance and do ballet you still growing bones mold and form differently due to the positions and going on pointe. I think u will definately love ballet though. GO FOR IT! good luck. (if you want to get an adults only class, get a group of at least six people who want to do ballet, go to a local dance studio and ask if they can make a class and tell them u have people who are interested)Answer by dance jewel

Keys to being a good dancer include practice, dedication, and hard work of course. You should try to find a school in your area with experienced and legitimate teachers, that holds adult classes. Make sure it is not just a “rinky dink” studio where the teachers really don’t know what they are doing. When beginning ballet, usually there isn’t any criteria for beginners, especially adults. All you need is a desire to learn ballet!
Good luck!
Answer by Erin LMost dance schools (especially larger ones) have an adult beginner or intermediate division. Also, if you’re a student or alum of a university, look into student-run dance groups; most are open to all skill levels and offer classes at low cost or free. Since most ballet dancers peak at your age or even younger, since you’re just starting now it is impossible to develop the flexibility and turnout expected of professionals. However, with frequent practice you will develop a certain level of proficiency in the steps and your fitness will benefit greatly. So if your interest is a career in ballet, you’re off to a late start for that but I would nevertheless encourage you to try ballet classes simply for the enjoyment of it.Answer by ballet_babe10
you definitly could. alot of studios have adult porgrams. check out the book by eliza gaynor minden called ‘the ballet companion’ its a really good ballet book and it had a section about starting ballet late. most of the rest of the book is about technique and history. i have it and i absoultely love it. it has really helped me in class too.Answer by Ebone N
Wow. What a dream that is. Well, all I can tell you is that it takes a lot of practice to dance like a ballet dancer. If you have the movie Step Up, then you know they do a lot of dances in that movie. If i was you, I would try and do those dances.
