At least to me, there’s a difference between having sex with a friend and making love to a lover. The process may be the same, but when with a lover, it feels far more powerful… well, it used to lol!

Euphemisms exist because many people are prudes.
People are strange. For some reason they don’t like saying ‘intercourse’ or just frankly ‘having sex’.

Given your age, you know this is a very old term that encompassed activity from hand holding to hugging and kissing. At that time it was rarely used to make reference to the act of sex.
