Louise: Is having big breasts a universal beauty standard, like facial symmetry…?
….or is it more of a cultural preference? I’ll try to explain a little better….
I know that facial symmetry and a low waist hip ratio (waist is small in comparison to hips/butt) are considered universal standards of attractiveness – they apply to people of all races and cultures.
People of different ethnicites tend to have different sized eyes, noses, lips etc, but they can all have good facial symmetry, and that’s apparently what’s attractive.
It’s the same with waist hip ratio – certain races are only short with small frames and slender builds, such as many oriental people, whereas others tend to be larger built, like people from some parts of Africa. Women from any of these races can have a low waist hip ratio, regardless of their frame size, body build etc.
What i’m trying to ask is this – is having big breasts regarded as being universally attractive in every culture in the world, like these two factors of beauty are said to be by experts? Because i read on one website that “men generally like large breasts”, but then i read on another website that “preference for certain breast sizes is cultural”. Which is true, or is it a combination of both?
Thanks very much for serious answers…. If you regard this question as stupid (actually, i do a little myself!), then please don’t rant at me! Thanks again =)

Nope, the preference for large “rounded” breasts is not universal by any means.
For example, some tribal peoples wear a heavy plate around their neck to flatten the breasts because in that culture, the “preferred” look is of very flat, pendulous breasts.
Again, in a lot of very ancient sculptures, breasts are minimally represented (if at all) and the emphasis is on the shape of the hips and buttocks.
Look at fairly recent (ie 18th/19th century) painting, and you’ll see that a tendancy towards plumpness is evident, and that although breasts are represented, more “attention” is given to the stomach/buttocks/thighs as an indication of what was generally considered attractive.
The narrow waist, large breasts, moderate hips, flat stomach “hollywood glamour” ideal of physical beauty is fairly recent, and indeed, one only has to look at the 1960’s “twiggy” look, and one will find minimising bra’s, strapping and other devices all intended to give a “small bust” look.

Innately its more of an instincual response type thing but our culture and envrironment can and often overrides those preferences- after all thats what makes us “advanced” and all that. The most likely reason big breasts are preferred because they are an accurate sign of youth. The larger the breasts the easier they sag and others can tell if they are young or old. Small breasts do not sag as much as a woman gets older thus it is more difficult to tell if she is still in her prime and fertile. A womans breastfeeding ability has nothing to do with the size of her breasts which was one of the first explanations offered for the preference for large breasts, now proven untrue.
Anyways, it largely depends on individual preference; a guy with his friends will all agree that a woman has nice boobs because theyre big or whatever lol, but can really admire smaller boobs. It just depends on the guy. So much of it has to do with culture or individual taste or whatever that our instincts can easily be overriden. Especially if you have a guy that gets to know the girl and he likes her personality and places less importance on specific charecteristics of youth and fertility and more on things like kindness and loyalty which have social benefits as well. But theres a reason guys go after girls who look like barbie. Blonde hair is a sign of youth and in blue eyes guys can see the dilation of pupils better- a sign of attraction. But cultures in Africa look down and are actually disgusted by girls who look like this because it is so strange. So culture plays a major part in it. Having visible breasts which are perky and symmetrical (well, symmetrical to the human eye, since no woman’s breasts are 100% perfectly identical) are universal signs of fertility and feminity. They show that a woman has gone through puberty, has estrogen because she has developed breasts, and is young and therefore fertile.
However, having large breasts, like we often see in Western culture, is a cultural preference rather than a biological one. In other parts of the world, such as Japan and Africa, there isn’t a massive focus on large breasts. One of my friends is obsessed with Japan, and he says that when they sell sex (in magazines and on TV etc) over there, it’s very much butt orientated, and there’s no fuss about having massive breasts like there is in Western culture.
Essentially, having attractive (pert, good skin, symmetrical, in proportion with body) breasts is a universal beauty standard, but having large breasts is not.
