box outside thinker: I was recently a victim of a scam. The scammer has my name, birthday, and address. Can he steal my identity?
Fortunately, the scammer does not have my social security number. However, he/she knows where i work and also knows my income. I am VERY concerned that he/she may try to steal my identity. Is it possible for my identity to be stolen without my social security number? Can my social security number be obtained based on the information he/she knows about me? Also, are there any precautions i can take to ensure my safety from identity theft?

Depending on the ability of the scammer most things can be obtained via post through knowing a few details. How did you apply for a drivers licence replacement? You need a bit more than the details you have lost. It all depends on how keen the person is. If they are hellbent on obtaining your identity then you probably can’t stop them. Although making sure you use stromg passwords, where applicable (banks etc) and have a difficult signature to copy then you should be OK.
The internet has enabled millions to obtain basic details of people. Any facebook member can access the things you are worrying about (name, birthday, address). If you are not a millionaire or have no connection politically then you shouldnt need to worry!
Answer by DoyleI would recommend putting a fraud alert on your credit. do it free at https://www.experian.com/ (look for fraud alert under “credit report assistance”) it lasts for 90 days and you will get a free credit report.
As far as them getting your ss#, if they want it bad enough, they could get it.
Answer by Steve KThink about anything you have that you verify your identity with Name, Phone, Income, etc…
Probably can’t steal your Identity …. but can use your name as an alias to receive medical care or something. They don’t NEED a SSN to claim they are you. A background check on your name can have the hospital send your name and birthday to a credit agency… they will look up your SSN by name, SSN, occupation… etc… then some fantastic news to you… you might have been in the hospital and registered for HIV or AIDS+…. now you get a ton of fliers in the mail for HIV…
It’s a lot worse than just monitary theft. It can be your reputation, your medical history, or anything that can effect you.
– Obtain some Pre-Paid Legal coverage so you are covered against potential identity theft or unauthorised “ANYTHING” with your life.
They can help you rebutt anything that comes your way besides just monitary loss in identity theft. Also helps for traffic fines 😉
I’m not saying you need to buy it… just saying it might be something to consider with the prices of lawyers just to fight identity theft, Cr@P….
Good Luck to you!!!!!!
Answer by AdrianReport it to the police, so at least it is on record.
Crooks can use your birth date to obtain false birth certificates, and create a new identity for themselves. They then get driver’s licenses.
You are at risk. Watch your credit rating carefully, in case they get credit cards in your name, and watch for any strange mail coming to your home – it may be a clue that the crooks are up to something. Report anything like that to the police.
They may not use this information for 5 or 10 years – just sell it to other crooks. That’s why you have to keep watch. It may turn out that they don’t use it at all, but you never know…
