Heloise: How to start playing a sport in high school?
As a kid, I’ve always been rather sickly and ill practically every month, so I ended up being a weakling. It’s not that I’m sick at the moment – just horribly untrained, 0 level at everything. And I feel I’ll have to join a sport team.
How can I avoid looking ridiculous? I mean, I know I’ll train myself eventually, but at present I’m bound to be worse than everybody else. How should I act?
Thanks if you got any tips!

just go to your school coach and ask him how to join. Good luck.
hey i feel the same way cause i never played any sports as a kid and then going into my freshman year i made myself try sports so i could get out of PE and also cause i wanted to try new things!
you can always go out for a no cut sport but dont be afraid to try a cut sport! some of the sports at my school that have tryouts only have them to get rid of the people who dont really care or put any effort into it so dont sweat that part too much.
i would say start small and then build up from there. so even before the sport starts, you have a lot of time in the pre season to practice! you can always ask the coach what you should do if you want to try the sport, they like to see people who make an effort! i went out for tennis and lacrosse my freshman year. tennis was fun (i just played on c-team but thats okay too! im not a competitive tennis player either so it worked out nicely). also lacrosse was REALLY intense, but it taught me to push myself harder each time to improve.
to avoid looking ridiculous (i have the same fear), make sure you try your best! sorry that sounds so cliche but its true. dont get discouraged! im going to use lacrosse as an example. even if you mass a pass or have trouble shooting, dont take it out on yourself or anyone else. just brush it off and try again! and if you see that you need more work with something, dont hesitate to ask a friend, or the coach. and dont expect that you will get better without practice (theres a lot of people like that on my team), if you have practice catching, then practice that outisde of practice! it will show through that you improved!
it really depends on what sport you go out for. if it makes you feel better, im in my sophomore year and im going to try track and field in the spring even though ive never tried it but as of now what im trying to do to prep myself for it is to start running after school and on weekends more often, also practice my stretching, so i might start some yoga (cause i want to try hurdles). and also email the coach and see if i can get a personal trainer during the fall. dont be discouraged! as long as you are trying your hardest i promise no one will think you look ridiculous! we only really trash talked about the people on our team who DIDNT try, and always complained. everyone loves someone who has a positive attitude! i hope this helps! 🙂
