bm: How to monitor a computer within my home network?
My teenager has her own computer and I have mine. I would like to monitor what she is doing and who she is talking to while online. I do not have any sort of access to her computer, so I will need to monitor her from my own PC. I will also need to do this discreetly to avoid problems (parents you know what I mean). How can I do this? I know the basics about computer usage and internet and yes I do know how to install programs on my computer. Thanks for any help.

If you cant track it, you can start by using parental controls provided by your service provider (limiting what sites she can view).

😐 your digging for trouble, teens need there privacy ecpessially girls. if she uses MSN though you can make it save chat logs to the shared documents folder wich you can browse through on your computer.

How about you give your kid some privacy? If you have reservations about what she is doing online then you shouldn’t have given her her own computer.

If you don’t trust her then take it away. Have an open conversation about the things that scare you about her being online rather than snooping. Otherwise she’s just going to end up resenting you and not trusting you in return.

Just because she’s a teenager doesn’t mean that she has no right to privacy.

You can download a program called Cain and Abel. ( www.oxid.it ) Once it is set up you can see what sites she is going to and you can see some of what she is typing. When you first start to use it, it is really hard but you sort of get used to how it feels. The program connects to your internet connection and then can monitor what the other person on the network is doing. It is not legal to use on a connection that you do not own. Also when it is open there is no icon so you can just minimize it when someone is walking by so that they wont know what you are doing. Good luck.

Try being a responsible parent and making responsible decisions.. if you don’t want your child doing certain things, either take time out of your busy day and try being a real parent, or don’t give your kid a computer to begin with.

You have a few options:

1) Block certain websites like file-sharing, adult content, weapons, etc. using this free service from https://www.opendns.com/

Basically you create a free account and select the types of websites to block, it also keeps a log of the sites visited. You make one quick adjustment with your wireless router or on your teenagers computer. You basically change the IP address for the DNS on either. OpenDNS will give you an IP address to plug in and tells you how to perform this.

2) You could install computer management software that allows an individual to monitor other computers on the network through watching other users. This is used a lot in education through programs like insight, synchroneyes, schoolvue, etc. There is a free one called iTalc which is very similar to the others and can be found at https://italc.sourceforge.net/
