How to dance at a middle school dance?

jake: How to dance at a middle school dance?
I don’t mean dancing to a slow song but at a middle school dance where they are playing pop and stuff like that how do I dance. Everyone seems to be so good at it and when I try to dance it feels like im just jumping around (which I guess is part of it) but I still feel stupid trying to dance when everyone else seems like professionals. Any tips?
Thanks!

If you are more interested in having fun, then by all means just jump around!! Some people aren’t good dancers, and if you are not, then you can have a great time by just doing what you like.

What I am getting is that you are more interested in looking acceptable… so in that case, KEEP IT SIMPLE. Keep your feet planted at first. Almost all pop music is in four count pieces. Find the beat, then do something in one direction for two counts, then do the exact same thing in the other direction for two counts, and you’re done. (Well, repeat a couple of times… but nothing else to remember.)

Make your movements direct and purposeful (study the way cheerleaders hit their cheer poses)–the main thing that makes non-dancers look clumsy is that their movements are uncertain and without focus or direction. Only move your feet once every two or four counts–keep them planted for the most part.

A really good tip is to be still. Do not be afraid to remain completely still for two counts or four counts. Hold the last position you hit until you feel the beat again, then start dancing again. It looks really dramatic and professional.

Most importantly–don’t try to bust out a dance move you saw on a video. Dancing only looks good when you have internalized the movement and it feels right to you on your body. Don’t practice memorizing anything… just do things that feel comfortable and natural with the music that is playing.

I hope that helps.
