Chloe W,
I wouldn’t by any means start off with a parrot. I would suggest a parakeet.

It’s not a matter of money or space, it’s the fact that parrots make rotten pets. Like most birds, they’re meant to be free not locked up in a cage. Do yourself, your mom, and the bird a favor and don’t get one.Answer by candyxss07
Why would I want to convince MY parents that YOU should be able to get a parrot?Answer by Dropstars
Some idiot said not to buy it cause it deserves to be free. Listen, if she doesnt buy it, someone else will buy it or it will stay in the store in a cage.Answer by jchen1001
the best way is to save enough money to buy the parrot yourself. but to convince them say it is a lot less hassel then having a dog or cat. you don’t need to walk or train the cat to use the litter box. they don’t shed. they are small and aren’t dangerous like a pittbull. just some things you can say to your mom if you don’t have enough money for a parrot yourselfAnswer by Robyn
write them a letter saying why you want a Parrott.Answer by alrightmeanuglyangleisgone4good
you ready to devote 30 yrs or more of your life to a bird? They are loud and messy and need lots of attention. Some can live 80 years! You’re going to want to be going out and party and go off to college, who will take care of the bird then? Your Mom & Dad said NO and that’s for the best!Answer by JenVT
Parrots are ALOT of responsibility. They can live for 50 or 60 years and require lots of time and attention, and a highly specialized diet. What happens when you go off to school or get married and move away? I am not surprised your parents don’t want to get you one and it is probably a wise decision on their part. Sorry! A cockateil might be better. They don’t require as much care as their larger cousins and don’t live as long, either. Although mine is going on 20 years.Answer by littleviolet101
DO NOT get a parrot! And I tell everyone this, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PARROT!!! THAT IS THE FAMILY!! I would suggest getting a parakeet (budgie) they are the easiest 2 train. tell her it will be worth it.
P.S. I am supposing you are very young. are you in middle school? I am. It’s nice to meet you, I’m Lily.
P.P.S Look at my profile.Answer by jed slade
A parrot is for life, mine will outlive me ,so i have made provision for her in my will. You should start with a budgie or cockatiel, cockatiels can live for 14 years ,my last one died in my arms when she was 14 of a massive heart attack. They are a very great responsibility and demand your attention and time, they can be very loyal and loving companions but they do not forgive or forget cruelty.Answer by Dryad
i agree with mackenzie, parakeets are much easier to take care of and way cuter.
some factors to consider: have you had pets before? if so, how well did you take care of them? if not, are you willing to clean up their cage and feed them every day and make sure they’re happy and whatnot?
if so, tell all that to your parents.Answer by Vanessa
well you should pray to god to have a parrot 1est’
than if your neighbor has a pet.and if there going away for a couple days. You should prove to them that you can have a parrot.

I convinced MY parents to let me get a parrot when I was a Kid. Of course, I had to save up the $ 800 myself. Everything was great, untill I went off to college.
She plucked out all her feathers, except on her head, and screamed and bit all the time. She got better when I came home, but her life was hell for four years. Don’t get a parrot as a kid. You WILL regret it.
Everything was great again…..untill I got married. Now she is jealous of my wife. We have mostly worked through it, but its been tough. Parrots are for lonely old people with lots of time.
Get a parakeet.
Answer by irishdude456Well, if you look at my other questions, i asked the same thing. I’m trying and they’re not sure but just prove to them that you are responsible and save up the money yourself. What i’m gonna say is please it will be the only gift I will get for christmas!
Anyway hope i helped!
Answer by Trust me, I’m a Doctor …..Its not about money really. Parrots are gregarious birds, they pine and get bored easily if they are on there own unless they have constant mental stimulation and interaction. They can be noisy and destructive.
Please don’t keep one on its own in a cage. They live for many many years, who will look after it while you are at college and out enjoying your life?
Answer by bikerbabeannaAs an owner of Large Macaws I do not suggest them for a childs first bird they can be very dangerous. All birds require a good diet not just the seeds and pellets sold in stores they need fresh fruit and veggies daily. They are a lot of work not to just be left in a cage to look at all the time they need companionship, love, and a lot of training. If you have your heart set on getting a bird it is best to start out small say a cockatiel, I also have those they are less dangerous than the large birds, but can still do bodily harm if they want to. If after a few years you decide you still want a large parrot then research them very carefully before making a decision. Like the others said they will live many years most likely if properly cared for longer than you will.Answer by Gems
parrots are NOT a kids/teens pet…
think of adding a parrot to your life as adding a 2 yr old child who is prone to tempertantrums, will NEVER grow up and will live for 20+ yrs!
if adding a parrot to your family it should not be a case of convincing. unless EVERYONE in the home wants a bird, WAIT!
wait till you graduate school, have your own home and a steady job and IF you have enough time, add a parrot then after LOTS and LOTS of research add a bird.
parrots require HOURS of attention per day, no hanigng out with firneds or weekends away
Answer by ThornMakenzie R – a budgie is just as much a parrot as a macaw is. e.eAnswer by ktflowerm
If you really, really want a parrot I none of us can stop you. Convince your parents you can handle it by proving you can prepare good food, clean the cage daily, handle the biting, screaming, dust, etc… Not to mention the enormous expenses that come with them. Prepare to save up into the thousands. Volunteer at a sanctuary or offer to bird sit for a friend or neighbor.
The best idea is don’t even try. You are far, far too young to care for a parrot. Even if you do it, as others have said… There is college, and marriage, and kids… All things that commonly lead to parrots being rehomed. I enjoy working with psittacines but there is no way I’d be able to handle a large parrot in my home, and I know it!
From the Washington Post article, Bye-Bye Birdie:
Unlike cats and dogs, which have been domesticated for thousands of years, even parrots bred in captivity are a few generations removed from the wild. The instinctive behaviors that serve parrots well in their native habitats — screaming, biting, chewing and flinging food around — do not endear them to the typical American pet owner.
Add to that a lifespan of 20 to 80 years and a list of intractable, and often frightening, parrot pathologies that can develop when a single, sexually mature bird is kept isolated in a cage all day, and many parrot owners can not get rid of their pets fast enough. ”
Moreover, parakeets, cockatiels, etc ARE parrots, just smaller and easier to care for. But they are in the same family (Psittacidae) other parrots.
Answer by ♥★OwensBaby★♥Hi. First if they don’t want one don’t nag for it.
Parrots are big responsibilities so you have to be ready. They can cost from 0-10,000 dollars. They live for 80+ years and can bite off your finger.
You might start off with good grades and watching friends birds to learn of the work it is.
The you might say “Mom, i have been getting good grades lately, watching our friends pets and stuff and wanted to get a parrot.”
If she says no respect her decision then maybe ask if it can happen later.
If she says yes start looking in the newspaper and on the internet. Go visit with the person you find for a little while to make sure you like this bird.
Then comes the commitment. You have to play with it for 3 hours a day at least. Clean its water every day and give it new food. You have to clean its cage. Make sure your bird has plenty of toys for when you aren’t around.
If you are gone during the day at school you might want to consider a different animal.
Parrots can be very loud. Buy a handbook on macaws and read every last paragraph. You have to do as much research as possible. It is very important.
I hope i helped. I am only in 4th grade.
FYI never feed him/her avocado. this will kill all birds.
