A wireless router makes a wireless network. If you just want to connect to wifi, use a wifi adapter.
Most laptops have one included.
First thing you need is an ISP (Internet Service Provider).
You then need a wireless router, no wireless routers do not come with laptops, sometimes they come free with your ISP (usually if you sign a 12 month contract).
Then you need to make sure your laptop has a wi-fi card in it (if it’s new then it should have, they’ve been standard in laptops for about 2-3 years now).
You then need to connect your wireless router up to your ISP this is different depending on the type of connection you have. If you have an ADSL connection (an ISP that comes through your phone line – in the UK these are all ISP’s except Virgin Media) you need an ADSL router, if you have cable modem ISP (like Virgin Media) you need an ethernet router.
With an ethernet router connect the internet cable from the cable modem into the internet port
With ADSL router connect the telephone cable to the telephone port on the router.
Turn the router on and then connect to your router with the laptop wi-fi.
With ADSL router you will need to go to 192.168.1.1 on your web browser and set up all the proper settings for your adsl that your ISP requires.
With cable modem you might just need to go through computer provisioning, just follow your isps instructions.
