Not Angie Jolie: How does a cat breeder become a responsible reputable one?
Ok FIRST OF ALL: I am not a breeder and I don’t plan to become one, I have spayed/neutered cats.
I am just curious as to how a cat breeder can become a responsible reputable one? How can one prepare before she starts breeding cats?

I think it involves alot of research into the breed itself and you have to spend alot of money making sure the cat is healthy enough to breed and that you arent breeding one with health problems the kittens could get. Also i think you have to be very picky about who you choose to get involved with as far as who gets the kittens and who fathers the kittens. you dont want to be knee deep in something with someone you barely know and then realize they are greedy and dont care anything about the breed. also, real breeders dont breed more than once a year after they are already over 2 years of age and most limit it to two litters.
Well first, you must get a purebred cat… most people wouldn’t pay much money for a mutt. A reputable breeder wouldn’t inbreed or have any illnesses in their line. Also, they would vet check their kitties VERY often to insure healthiness. Also, the breeder won’t just give their cats to just anybody.Answer by Brenda L
A responsible breeder of any live animal ONLY BREEDS TO IMPROVE THE BREED.
Here is a link to the CFA (Cat Fancier’s Assoc) website:
There is much terrific information contained regarding breeding, spay/neuter, showing and breed selection.
There is not enough money in breeding simply for the sake of selling animals to make it worthwhile – breed to improve the breed, exhibit your quality animals, and follow the advice contained on the CFA website.
Answer by fordicus1- Choose a breed of cat and research it.
2- Join the breed clubs for that breed of cat.
3- Attend cat shows ans seminars to experience the cats first hand and talk to breeders to get an understanding of the issues within that breed.
4- An optional step would be to then purchase a show neuter and get experience of showing the cat.
5- Start by buying one breeding queen from good lines and show her in order to get plenty of feedback on her good and bad points.
6- Apply for a breeding prefix.
7- Identify a mentor and join a support group for novice breeders.
8- When your queen is old enough take her to a stud cat of the same breed to be mated. You will choose the stud that best complements to features of your female so that you are striving to improve the breed type with each generation.
9- Take great care to prevent potential health problems in the kittens as they grow and seek veterinary attention for the slightest worry. Socialise the kittens well by providing them with lots of stimulus and attention.
10- Register all the kittens. When you sell them provide registrations, vaccination cards, insurance vouchers and full pedigrees.
11- Do not seek to make any profit from breeding but realise that it is an expensive but rewarding hobby. In the unlikely event of making any profit it should go straight back into the cats.
12- Enjoy what you do! Communicate well and politely with other breeders and take pride in producing healthy, happy kittens that will bring delight and pleasure to new owners.
