: How do I socialize my dog to a new puppy?
My dog is a 9-year old rat terrier. She has lived as an only dog all her life. Yesterday, my family decided to buy a brand new male beagle mix puppy. My rat terrier doesn’t socialize with the puppy and ignores it. I think shes jealous because whenever the puppy tries to play with her she acts scared and runs under the computer desk. Please help me! I really want to socialize her to the puppy!

For a 9 year old dog who’s been an only dog her whole life, your dog’s doing amazingly well. Leave her alone!

She can’t be expected to be this puppy’s best pal overnight. The fact that she isn’t attacking the puppy is great. Leave both of them alone. You’re expecting way too much from her. They’ll work out their relationship best without any human interference. You ONLY interfere if she gets aggressive (and that doesn’t mean growling at the puppy to warn it away from her).

Take both dogs out of your house so your dog doesn’t think the puppy is tiring to take over its territory and don’t pamper your puppy more than your old dog it will make her jealous and you don’t want that. While out of the house let the 2 dogs interact with each other this will show your older dog that the puppy is not out to steel her place.
