swelwynemma: How do I go about finding accommodation in Kumamoto for next year? Lots of other questions, sorry!?
I’m hoping to go there in Jaunary until April, as that’s when I’ll be at university there.
Is staying in halls at all feasible/possible?
What do I need to do before I go to the accommodation?
If I can’t find halls, then what websites/directories would you suggest I look at for families etc in Kumamoto?
Any other hints/tips?

Your university will almost definitely have an English page where you can find your answers about staying in Kumamoto. Just look up the name of the university on google and there’ll be something I’m sure.
Generally speaking, you cannot rent apartments for less then a year in Japan. It is also very impractical, because the “keymoney” (non-refundable money you have to put at the beginning) is generally worth of several months.
Therefore if you are a student, and need an accommodation, generally university has some kind of solution for you, e.g. dorms. These solution are not necessarily cheap, but can be pre-arranged and can stay there from day one. Contact you university’s foreign student office or your professor in Japan, and ask if you can stay in dorm / foreign student dorm. This is what generally students who stay for less than a year do. Anyway, Kumamoto is a relaxed countryside city, so i guess they have there facilities at low price. You also can find many friends in a dorm from day1.
