Hi, Im going to the Rio Carnival in Brazil. we have left is quite late to book accommodation, but even dorm beds cost £50 (UK) online. We knew hotels would be expensive, but are these just tourist prices or is it really so expensive during that period? (50£ for a dorm bed! – come on). Any help would really be appreciated. It is frustrating that we dont speak portuguese (only Spanish)!

Well! That’s the price. It’s what we call here Alta Estação (High Season) and its period is in December-March, because it’s summer here. It’s not a trap.

Carnival season is very expensive in Rio. And the £ has collapsed against the Brazilian R$ in the last couple of years. £50 is about right for a cheap hotel. I think it’s overpriced for a dorm bed. A good place to look is www.Craigslistlist.com; they have Rio pages with a lot of personal ads for apartment rentals.
This hostel claims to be very cheap , but cheap safe hostels are likely to be sold out alrady for carnival. Good luck with your search

no matter what, during the tourist season they jack up the prices, no way to avoid it. been living on the beach for three years and every year its the same for tourists

About the language, you’ll be ok. Latin Languages have the same linguistic basics so even if you would speak in Italian people would probably understand you, just be patient.

About the dorms, those are common prices during the carnival in Rio de Janeiro but maybe you can cut on other expenses by splitting grocery shopping costs or hitch hiking instead or travelling by bus. Another option would be the favelas..
