Get those big fans in the ceiling for each room.

Get a couple of large box fans and set one in a window at both ends of the house, as far apart in the rooms as you can. Whichever window is on the shadiest side of the house in the afternoon, turn that so that it brings air INTO the house. On the other side of the house where it is hottest in the afternoon, set the fan to pull air OUT of the house by pointing it out the window. Leave the fans running as much as you can/ You want to suck the coolest air you can find from outdoors through the house and let the exterior venting van suck the hot air out of the house. Decluttering the house can make it seem cooler too. Put away accessories and decor for the summer, even roll up area rugs if you have wood or tile floors. If the house is two storied, keep the exhaust fan on the second floor to draw out the hotter upstairs air as it rises through the house. Disconnect electronics like TV’s and computers when you are not using them — they produce a lot of heat even when they are idling. Switch all your light bulbs to PL fluourescents or LED bulbs which put out far less heat than regular old pear shaped incandescent bulbs.

Look into having an attic fan installed. Depending upon where you live, there are things called whole house fans also. Basically, they sit in the opening to your attic (or a created opening) and draw the heat up and out a vent.
Ceiling fans may help keep the air circulating but won’t really cool the house. Window units in strategic places – be they fans or AC units can work but may also spike your electricity bill significantly. Keeping window fans running upstairs 24/7 and you may notice a change downstairs upon your return home.

Swamp coolers and fans would be helpful, however fans can just blow around hot air if it’s too hot. Large plants can help with the cooling and make things feel fresher. Plants are naturally cooling, so if you place 2 or 3 large plants around your home, it can help. We just had friends buy a new home in Georgia, when we visit it’s great to be in an area with lots of trees to escape the heat when there are those 90 degree summer days. They also have a few plants around the house to cool things and save on the electricity bill.
