southpines_2000: What are the laws regarding hidden camera mystery shopping?
I would like to start a business mystery shopping automotive dealership service departments in Arizona and I was wondering if it is legal to use hidden cameras to assist me in the evaluation of employees. I would not show the video to anyone, I would only use it for reference and evaluation purposes. If a dealership hires me to do this, would they be required to alert employees beforehand, such as telling them that they will be mystery shopped, but not giving specific times or dates? If I do not intend to show the video to anyone, would I need the employees permission to take the footage? I don’t want to encounter any legal issues, so any information you could provide would be appreciated. Thanks a lot.

The fact that you do not intend to show it to anyone means nothing, so quit repeating it.
If the open to the public business does not have a sign where a normal customer would see it that say something like “no video taping” then you can tape all you want. You cannot enter into areas marked “Office” or Authorized Personnel” and tape without permission.
