This is the first time my friends and I are booking a motel room by ourselves.

Yes. They do this to hold the room for you. Be careful if you are close to your limit or are using a debit card with a low limit. Some hotels debit your card for the reservation amount and then credit your account for the unused amount. This could put a crimp on your vacation if it maxes out your card.
