: How long do new family relationships take to build?
I have been in my current relationship now for two years. Met his family, spent holiday occasions with them. Unfortunately i still feel like an outsider to them. Whenever i text or call it takes hours or days to get responses, so i have stopped reaching out. Or they call my fiance to discuss whatever family business. It just really irks me that they want to be family only when they want to be On “special occassions” my man tells me inlaw relationships take time, but how much time? Especially when your cut out on conversing on a regular basis.

First off, I’m still pretty young (twenties) and have a little ways before I get married, but I’ll share my findings from personal experience.
It varies, and depends not only on how frequently, but how long you visit/talk with them.
From my experience, it took several months just to open the door, and 2 years before they had a mold of an opinion of me.
And even then, it wasn’t a very positive one.
But then you look at those movies where the inlaws are just at odds, and you can think to yourself, “It could be worse – at least we’re not like them”.
Once you get married and have a ceremony, I think that’s when they really consider you family. That’s kind of the way the tradition works, you know?
