What is the biological function of a female orgasm?

Diddle: What is the biological purpose of a female orgasm?
The purpose of the male orgasm to expell semen is obvious, but why does females have orgasms? (in a biological sense). Naturally, of course they deserve the same pleasures as men. Would females maybe otherwise don’t let males near them if there is no “benefit” in doing so?

There is no proven biological reason for this. But it’s probably a good thing to be able to do anyway.

Answer by morgian13
During orgasm the muscles in a woman’s uterus and vagina contract. This probably serves a similar function to the male orgasm, obviously not in expelling sperm, but in helping sperm reach the egg.
Studies have shown that fertilization is more likely to occur if the woman is aroused. I am not sure if orgasm was considered separately or as a part of this though.
It’s also somewhat presumptuous to assume there is no benefit to the woman if orgasm doesn’t occur. Arousal could be a motivator in and of itself.

I believe you answered your own question when you said pleasure. Would people have sex if it were not pleasurable? Probably, but just not as much. If not, then how would we maintain a high level population. People would need sex for the mere fact of procreating. That is the purpose of sex, but it is also for pleasure. There are many people who don’t want children. Why would they have sex if pleasure were taken away? If sex were not pleasurable, then we may see a decrease in population. Look at how many women get pregnant “accidentally.” This would be close to zero if it were not pleasurable. So, I say pleasure. It makes logical sense for procreation.

Contraction of the uterine muscles and vagina is a good physical explanation for helping fertilization. Another theory, that is complementary, is that orgasms have an evolutionary advantage – men that are caring enough to elicit orgasm in women may also be better providers and fathers. So better men = better lovers = orgasms = more likely to result in pregnancy.

As stated in a couple of the other answers, the female orgasm causes contractions of the uterine muscles. These contractions lead to a dipping of the cervix (the entrance to the uterus) into the puddle of semen deposited in the vagina. This may facilitate the movement of sperm into the uterus, increasing the probability of fertilization.

Answer by mriveraemt
The contraction the woman has during orgasm help move the semen up tpwards the egg to be fertilized.
