How many average words are there in a normal novel/teenager novel?

emily noona: How many average words are there in a normal novel/teenager novel?
I am currently writing my own book, so I would like to find out how many words are in adult novels and how many are in teenager novels. Please say how many if you know, thank you.

I’m currently reading ‘The Wheel of Time’ series by Robert Jordan. 12 books, each around 800 to 1100 pages. All small font and no pictures.

But i think around 500 pages should suffice.

It used to be said that a typical length for a novel was around 70,000 words. Nowadays, many of hte most successful novels are quite a lot longer, so the typical length should probably be more like 100,000.

The length isn’t important, but publishers have expectations, and if your book departs substantially from the norm for a particular genre, then it will need to be exceptionally good to persuade a publisher to go ahead.

Most teenage fiction is quite a bit shorter, though, and I would suggest you aim at more like 50,000 words.

But never pad it out to be long enough. And it it needs to be longer, it needs to be longer.
