TimmyJ: Anybody think cloud computing will destroy a lot of the IT industry?
As more and more companies move towards cloud computing and web based apps, does anybody else think it will eliminate many IT jobs, hardware and software companies? If everything is running in large data centers, won’t this be where most jobs will be based?
Anybody have comforting thoughts for those of us working in the network/systems administration field of things.

All cloud computing does is move the compute-intensive stuff into a different realm. For the most part, the Global 2000 (who account for upwards of 80% of all money spent on IT) is already running in data centers. What’s happening now is “datacenter transformation,” which means smaller servers (blades), networked storage (SAN) and virtualized hardware (VM). There will still be plenty of jobs for those who are able to evolve and adapt.
Darwinism at its finest. 🙂
