Dreamy: Adopting a kitten but are there any differences between breeds?
I am going to adopt a kitten but for a first time ownign a cat, are there any breeds that are easier to take care of? There are probably no pedigree breeds in the shelter but what breeds can I probably choose from? Thanks everyone!

It seems that most cats at the pound are just your average cat. You just have to be a bit careful with older cats, because of old habits. They seem to come out just fine, but it takes a while. Kittens are fairly annoying for the first 6 months and require a lot of attention, but they seem to adapt fairly well, except when they’re trying to get into trouble.
I don’t think what breed it is makes any difference, but if you want slightly more of a low-maintenance cat, then get one that is preferably short-haired or medium at least, coz if you get a Persian or something then you’re gonna have to take care of its coat really well. Apart from that I think they’re all pretty much the same! Oh but one thing, it’s been proven through research that male cats are more affectionate! (wish I’d found this out before I got my baby girl kitty! lol)
Good luck, I’m sure you’ll have heaps of fun with him/her! 🙂
Answer by blackmask278The shelter will probably have standard shorthair or longhair cats; the more desirable breeds get snatched up quickly by those who work there, or their friends. Siamese can be aggressive, and Persians tend to have respiratory problems. I would choose one that appears healthy, the have a Vet check it out and schedule a day to have it spayed/neutered. Most people like the cuddly kittens, so they get adopted fast–I like the older cats, because they have mellowed out, don’t do as much damage, and are grateful as H*LL to be out of the shelter. I also prefer short haired cats-they shed less, so there’s less to sweep up, and they don’t cough up hairballs as often after cleaning themselves. Let your feelings guide you!Answer by chicki
It is highly unlikely that you will find a pedigree cat at a shelter. Moat animals that are there are a product of random breeding and are considered mixes or moggies.
Once in a blue moon a purebred is turned in but there are many purebred rescue groups that are immediately notified when that type of cat is turned in and they take it and re home it.
Many times a shelter will give the cat a pedigree name just to get it placed while others will call it a breed/mix like Siamese/mix because it some remote way it resembles a certain breed.
If you want a certain breed then start your search. https://www.acfacat.com/breed_synopsis.htm
