mollyneville: Why is the “new year” celebrated in January?
It makes more sense to me to have the new year during September, when the seasons change, and near the time the school year begins.

Why in January? Because Pope Gregory decided that when he started the Gregorian Calendar.
Before that, in many “Christian” or “Catholic” countries the New Year started on March 25th.
