Raymond: Why is it always “Merry Christmas / Happy New Year” ? Would “Happy Christmas / Merry New Year” be wrong?
Could we also say something like “Gleeful Christmas and Jocund New Year”, or perhaps “Jolly Christmas and Mirthful New Year” ? Would it be innapropriate? Why?

They say Happy Christmas in England. Merry is an American thing.
No… Its just the way we got used to say itAnswer by David Z
I think we in America could use some change, but Merry Christmas is kind of what we’re use to.Answer by dougeebear
You can say anything. greeting cards are great at this: “Joyful tidings of the season”, etc.
Happy Christmas/Merry New Year just feels awkward to me. Happy Christmas is what the British say, and I have no issue with that. It’s the Merry New Year that seems strange. I mean, you don’t say Merry Birthday, or Merry Halloween. I think Merry is reserved for Christmas greetings.
