eyikoluvsandy: Why doesn’t my father encourage my field of study?
I have a passion for languages. I got a BA in Spanish, and I’m going to NYU this summer for a couple intensive Japanese courses. I plan to participate in the JET program and stay in Japan for a year to learn the language. After all of this, I plan to become a translator/interpreter, while pursuing a career in publishing and editing (English Minor) and writing a novel in my spare time.
But my dad says “well, it’s just a cop out because you’re too lazy to do a real subject like Math or Science.” I was deeply offended by this, because it made it seem like my degree is a waste of money, and that I’m not doing math or science because I’m too weak or something. I WAS an Engineering Physics Major and a Chemistry Major once, and I failed all my classes because they were just so BORING! Meanwhile, I had A’s in English and Languages, and actually ENJOYED those classes.
Why can’t he understand that this is what I want to do with my life? Yes, I’ll need a Master’s later, but it’s what I love.

Its called a generation gap.
My suggestion, u can’t change his opinion ri now by arguing with him, it will hurt him and u both.
U do whatever u feel like, at least u r in school doing what u love to do. Anyway, u tried other subjects and thats not where ur heart is, so follow ur plan, become something/somebody, when u start making money with what u studied, ur father will realise he was wrong, not ri now.
good luck, stay in school, work hard and prove ur father wrong and at the same time make him proud of u.
