Spring Leaf: Why are only some foods taxed in Texas and where does that tax money go?
From research I see that beverages, alcohol, cigarettes, and some food are taxed… why are these products taxed and where does the tax money go?
And WHY did the state decide to tax those specific items?

They’re taxed because the state decided to tax them. The money goes into the state’s general fund for the most part though certain local option amounts will be turned over to the city or county that exercised the option.
Alcohol and cigarettes are NOT foods therefore they are taxed. As for beverages, non essentials beverages are normally taxes, such as soda, but not milk. Basically, foods regarded as purely convenience or “luxury” foods are taxed by the states, not foods that are regarded as “staples”, such as meat, potatoes and vegetables.
