happykels: when to go to a great vs average tattoo artist?
So obviously if you are getting a huge piece you’d probably want an exceptional tattooer to do the work, but if you’re getting a piece of flash or a small tattoo it wouldn’t matter so much, right? Is there a general rule of thumb for which pieces would require more skill (does that make sense?)
More specifically, as I’ve stated in earlier questions, I’ve beent thinking about getting a dream catcher, probably one that would fit into a 3×2 inch box (either back of my neck or ankle). Would an average tattoo artist be able to do this well, or should I seek out some one who was very well established and really good?(this would probably require some traveling on my part..)
Also, if you have an opinion on where I should get the dream catcher, feel fee to comment:)
THANKS
someone asked for my reasoning so..
1. I think that dream catchers are absolutly beautiful and delicate
2. A physical representation/reminder to focus on my good dreams for life and to not let any negitive thoughts that I or others have stay with me too long.

Well I would think that you would go to average tattoo artists when you’re getting something cliche that’s been done before. On the other-hand you got to a professional when you’re getting something like a picture of a person or getting a detailed tattoo.
Dream catcher are pretty common and because it’s only 3×3 then it would be even easier to do so I would go with your average tattoo artist.
Answer by Mr. Knowitallanything with colour or even shading i’de go to an exceptional artist….something thats all black i.e. tribal etc can be done by any artist really.Answer by Danny
Go to an excellent artist regardless. A dreamcatcher is a lot more difficult than you might expect. Look for an artist that has excellent line work and is able to draw a circle or you very well might end up with an awkward looking blob instead of a dreamcatcher.
This will also help if you want to get larger work later on because you will be a returning client and will be a bit more comfortable with the artist.Answer by Ken
good tattoos aren’t cheap and cheap tattoos aren’t goodAnswer by lil’ mermaid
I think for whatever tattoo you get, you should always get the best that you can afford. The tattoo will be with you forever and you don’t want to regret cutting corners to save some money. Regardless of the level of tattoo artist you get, make sure you look at their portfolio to get an idea of what sort of image they will produce. Because an average tattoo artist isn’t necessarily bad so as long as you are happy with their previous work, your tattoo should be fine 🙂Answer by crazzy_nascar_chick
A dream catcher sounds like a very intricate tattoo. I certainly wouldn’t go to an “average” artist for something so complex. That could end in disaster. In fact, I really don’t see a reason to ever go to an “average” artist for any tattoo. Why trust something that will be on you permanently to a novice? I’ve seen way too many bad tattoos done “professionally” to think that the label “average” is anything more than a nicer way to put unskilled or very inexperienced.
And the thing is, most of the time, a great artist won’t cost you that much more anyway. Of course, there may be “average” artists that charge a lot less than is typical, but most of the time they are quite happy to charge you a pretty penny for shotty work. Plus, most artists charge by the hour, not the piece. It would stand to reason that an “average” or less skilled artist would take longer to do a piece than a very skilled or great artist. That means that a great artist’s work might actually cost you less.
It’s simple, don’t take chances when it comes to your permanent body art. It’s just not worth it. As for the idea, I actually really like the idea. What’s your reasoning behind it? Do you have bad dreams often? Do you have a connection the the Native American culture? I’m actually really curious now lol.
Answer by InkslingerYou won’t have to shop around to get a good dreamcatcher tattoo. We do those in our sleep.Answer by Michael
You don’t have to worry about that. There are no great tattoo artists in Milwaukee.
