Richard L C: When Obama cuts our military by 75% will other countries have to start paying for their own defense?
We’ve guarded the world for 60 years and most countries have let their military be reduced to nothing because of the umbrella we’ve provided. They’ve spent their money on welfare and pensions instead of arms so what happens to them now that Obama will pull back?

False. There are no plans to cut the military by 3/4.Answer by Simon C
It’s more likely the other countries wouldn’t need their armies at that point.
The US has used their military to cause so many of the world conflicts over the past 40 years that if they were to cut their funding and stay out of people’s business, the world would be a far safer place to live.

Nice number, no facts behind it. Everyone bitched when Clinton cut back a little but we didn’t seem to be short enough not to attack Iraq with full force.Answer by [email protected]
Obama isn’t going to do any such thing. Which takes care of your question.
The thing I find fascinating about your question–which I asume was prompted by some right-wing propaganda piece or talk show–is wht is the right wing thinking? Do they not realize that it’s exactly this kind of nonsensical rhetoric that discredited McCain and the whole “neoconservative” movement? People hear this stuff, know it’s nonsense, and walk away (and vote Democrat as a result). yet they are continuing to do it. Do they enjoy losing elections and becoming an object of ridicule? Or they so dumb they don’t realize they are shooting themselves in the foot?
What do you think?

According to a 2006 congressional study, we supply the world with 37% of the worlds trade in arms. No other country even comes close. Some independent studies put that as high as 60%. (China, according to that same study, represents 3%)
Trust me, even if Obama wanted to he could not get a 75% reduction through congress or the people. But he can cut out a lot of pork and help stop this insane militarization of the planet.
I am all for a strong defense, but that is where it needs to stop. Not this offensive military and hired guns such as Blackwater that eat up huge amounts of our military budget.
We are not hated because of our system of government, our economic system, our freedom, our religion, our people, but rather what we do to others in our militarization of the planet and our business practices that are tied into that.

Answer by theshadowknowsThey will go begging to Russia or China for protection from countries like North Korea, Venezeula or Iran, that Russia and China have turned into threats to world security for this very reason. But he can’t, and probably won’t, reduce our military by that much, as he will find himself in his own versions of Bosnia or Iraq soon enough. The one good thing about the Iraq war is it used up a lot of obsolete equipment and supplies that should have been replaced 15 years ago, and has our troops the best trained, experienced and prepared in the world. I’m afraid we will be needing them even more in the future. Obama has stated his intention to do away with nukes, would be great if the whole world was nuke free, but unrealistic and suicidal to dismantle ours first, we don’t have the capacity for a sustained conventional global conflict as we did in teh first two world wars, our manufacturing base has been decimated by our own bureacracy and nimbys. In other words, we would lose, or at best concede allied nations or territories over to the aggressors in armistice/surrender terms.Answer by justagrandma
Well for sure they won’t be paying us back.
Hes not cutting the military, although he should.
We aren’t the worlds police either.
They do their own policing and they do have armies, just not to the grand scale we do. And its cost us, hugely.
The battles we fight now are not going to be ones where grand battlefields and facing armies shoot at each other. Or in locations where we bomb the stuffing out of them.
It will be small wars where highly trained units move in and kill the organizers and higher ups.
Like what we should have done in Afghanistan.

Hi! Person who works for the Dept. of Vet. Affairs here! Obama has made no such claim to cut back by 75%. His claim is for a 25% cutback and $ 10-12 billion from their budget. Anyone who lived through the Clinton years will know what this means (Clinton cut back the military by 35%):
little to NO opportunity for pay increase
more difficult to move up in ranks
less benefits
closed bases
The list goes on and on. Anyone who doesn’t believe this is in denial because I am working against it AS WE SPEAK!
Answer by Couldn’t be better, thank UAahh, I think the world will be relieved when the US finally starts minding its own biz. Don’t forget, you guys have been at war every single day since 1948 in one corner of the world or other.
Your question wreaks of ignorance.
