You have to have a lot more money to live in Santa Monica or Santa Barbara and both are on the ocean.
The list of differences is actually very long maybe you should be more specific.
It is a smaller city where most of it is close to the ocean. There is little in that city that is poor or gang infested. And it makes good use of the last 5 blocks close to the ocean. It has several tourist places there.
Santa Barbra is up the coast two counties. It is not as dense as Santa Monica or Los Angeles. It is however pricey. It is a beach city that also has a University of California branch.
Answer by SadThe difference is black and white, santa monica is a rich area while LA is gang infested, poor, slum.Answer by maliboo_girl
It depends on where you live in each area, they all have sketchy gang areas — yep, even SB and SM. All three areas have extremely expensive upscale areas, with beautiful homes, some near the beach. (Pacific Palisades and Venice are areas of the City of Los Angeles, as are Bel Air and Beverly Park.)
The biggest difference is probably that SB is kind of small and can feel isolated, and there aren’t many places to work to earn the kind of salary you need to afford SB expenses. SB is mostly very expensive, with many less moderately priced apartments in ok areas than we have in LA/SM. Many people who live in SB are wealthy and/or retired. In LA and Santa Monica, there are many places of employment for professionals who earn big bucks, so they can afford the expensive lifestyle.
SB also seems more limited in kinds of people who live there (not including students). Meaning it seems to cater to a certain type of person, whereas LA and SM are much more mixed. If cycling, triathlons, golf, art, wine tastings and book clubs are your thing, then SB may be a good fit.
Good luck!
