Sandy: What would you do if a co-worker went into your desk to take something out or took things off your desk?
My co-worker could have waited 5 minutes until I got back to my desk to get a key that he needed, but did not. What if s/he goes through recycling bins? What if s/he listens into neighboring conversations? Do you feel your privacy is being invaded?

big effing deal….why make all that drama?…If I need a key and your @ss isn’t there…and I can find it….next time be at your desk
Please I mean no disrespect, but men really don’t give a crap about something like this. If we need the key to get the job done…we take….and we don’t care….If someone needed the key and I wasn’t there, take it…I really don’t see the big deal….

I don’t know about this one. If he went into your desk for something else I’d say “yeah, he was invading your privacy” but if you’re the one who keeps the key and he needs it and you’re not there, then, I think he has to go into your desk to get it. Why not move the key somewhere where no one ever has to go through your desk to get it?
Also, if he goes through the recycling bin, then he’s gross. If he hears a neighboring conversation there really isn’t anything he can do about it, is there? You do have a right to expect him to not repeat conversations he overhears but as far as overhearing it, that’s the responsibliity of the people doing the talking.

It’s not a private place. You share with your co-workers. Any conversation can be heard by all who work there. If you want to have a private conversation, go someplace private. Also, if s/he needed the key and you weren’t there, he was within his rights to take it himself.Answer by MegaBeth
It’s slightly annoying, but your work space is not really personal property. Therefore, other people are allowed to come and go as they please. If I bring in things from home I make sure to label them with my name, and as a general rule I don’t leave anything on or in my desk that I wouldn’t want our company CEO to see.Answer by Jen
Keep your stuff locked up.Answer by Meg M
Were the keys in your desk, or on your desk? If they were on the desk in plain view, I wouldn’t make an issue of it. If they were in the desk, then he should have waited to ask. But either way I wouldn’t think you should be all paranoid now, lol. 🙂Answer by Just Me
um calm down, you are at work (which is a public environment not your private space) and if it a key needed for work he had all right to go and get it. its a key seriously its not like it was your wallet. and the fact that the person was upstanding enough to just take the key needed and not your cash, you have a good person your working with. get off the high horse there is nothing wrong here. whats in the recycling bin that is so note worthy (what are you recycling hummm?) have you never been in a restaurant and listened in on the table next to yours conversation, or a person on their cell phone, it is humans voyeuristic nature to do this. nobodies privacy’s being invaded. if its a private conversation do it somewhere private, not at work. if you have something in your desk you need to hide either take it with you or get yourself a small lock box. a working environment is much more fun if you relax and trust the people you are with, have fun, it will keep you young instead of grumpy and bitter.Answer by bella muerte
well, my office is pretty small, so private conversations are unheard of. I use my cell phone outside on my break if I don’t want snoopers. But I hear ya on the desk issue. I have a problem with people coming into my cubicle when I am there, so if they’re goin’ through it when I’m not I’d be pretty upset. Of course, I lock my desk drawer when I’m not at my desk, so there’s little to no chance of that happening (we’ve had some thefts lately, from people just walking in and no one paying attention).Answer by Cheryl
This co-worker sounds like my 38 year old sister. At first you don’t want to believe. Later on you start finding things missing. Like money.drugs, then your husband. Stop it now there are boundries. Somepeople don’t know any better.Answer by drey
If this is the first time it happened tell the person not to do it again,if it happens again set a mouse trap in your desk, last but not least tell your supervisor.
