The market imbalances don’t happen as often as they once did because of the NYSE market share shrinkage the past few yrs. Specialist also don’t do much anymore. The markets are much more electronic and fragmented. With 30+ dark venues, large orders are broken up for an algo to trade it. The NYSE is not the market center for NYSE stocks as they once were. Since the NYSE is not the center for NYSE stocks, imbalances really don’t mean much anymore because there’s so many places to trade the order instead of ny. Either electronically or upstairs the order can be worked with little public notice. The imbalance did have meaning when the NYSE was the center, it no longer is.
