ilovepink: What was the first time photography was used to impact the public?
For example….Lewis Hine and using photography to promote child labor laws, photography in the vietnam war (showing everyone how truly awful war really was). My partner and I are doing a long-term history project and we just need to know what was the first time. Any answers would be greatly appreciated!

I would say that whenever photography was invented, it began to impact the public. If you want to know when photojournalism was developed, that might be tricky to figure out. I feel like this question is an unanswerable one.

Regardless, Sergei Prokudin-Gorskii is one of my favorite examples of the impact of early color photography, if that helps at all.

Try Roger Fenton’s photographs of the Crimean war as a starting point. These were the first war photographs, and probably had some sort of public reaction.

EDIT: ‘Before Abraham Lincoln’. Interesting. Abe was born in 1809; the first photograph was made in 1826. Not possible. Unless there’s an alternative, parallel history of Planet Earth that nobody except gymnast babe knows about.
