moomoomilk: What should a beginning tennis player look for in a racquet?
I’m planning on joining my school’s tennis team, and I want to know what type of racquet I should buy. I’m a complete beginner, so I don’t want to spend over $ 30 or so.
Any links would be great.

The only racket you can get under $ 30 is a really bad one. A beginner really doesn’t need to look for much in a racket, at that point it doesn’t matter what racket you have. You’ll play the same whether you have a $ 250 racket or a $ 20 one. My reccomendation is that you just get a cheap racket from your local Walmart and then when you decide to stick with tennis, you can look into a better, more expensive racket.
If your budget is that low just buy anything you can find for that much. At that price you really can’t get much variety. Once you start playing a bit more, get to know your style, maybe have a coach see you play, then you can start looking into getting a more expensive, more customized racquet. The things you want to look for are head size (When I was younger I used to play with oversize racquets, 110sq in, but now I don’t go over 90sq in) and string tension. I don’t really know too much about head size. I would guess that bigger has a bigger sweet spot but it also produces more drag taking away fromy our power, and it’s generally heaviery. Heavier strings (tightened to close to or slightly over the limit for the racquet) is for players who produce a lot of power and need more control. Lighter strings are for players who need help with power, as the strings will absorb the energy from the ball and send it back much like a mini trampoline. But as I said, before you have to start considering this stuff it’s important to just buy any cheap racquet and play. Have someone who knows what they’re doing look at you, and after you’re been playing for a while then start looking to spend a bit more on your racquets. Tennis is a great sport. I highly recommend Wilson Federer Signature Tennis Racket
I use to take tennis lessons when I was young but haven’t played in a long time. I bought this racket and I absolutely love it. It has a very nice grip is very light and has very good ball control. It doesn’t make you play like Roger Federer, but its a good start!
I bought it with free shipping from…
Hope you like it. Good Luck!
I bought my racket from wall mart. Its a Price racket. Its my pride and joy but it was 60. They have Wilson rackets there for 30 though. Ive been playing tennis for years and if your serious about tennis you need a racket that is the right weight for you, so my advice would be wall mart for a first racket. :3
