What are the basics of a prop in rugby union?

ryan h: What are the basics of a prop in rugby union?
Hey guys, Im hoping you can help me, Im 23 years old, am 6`2 and weigh 118 kilos. Im pretty fit, running 6-8 ks, most days along with hard weights training, Id really love to play rugby union.
I was wondering if you could tell me how hard the game is to learn, and what are the responsibilities of a prop?
I appreciate any help you can give, cheers guys.

get into rugby if you have the chance its the best game in the world i love it! it depends on what side of the scrum you want to play on! i feel tight head is easier because you are pushing into two people . with lineouts you can either get stuck at the back to catch any loose ball or you could be a lifter and by the sounds of your build you will be a lifter.

Great physical attributes for someone that wants to be a prop.
a decent coach will teach you the basics of rugby and being a prop in a few weeks, a prop is a very technical position and if you are pretty fit too you will have responsibilities for carrying a lot of ball in to contact – lots of smashing – the best props have lots of experience so the more you practice the better you will get, and a lot of propping is about being technical not being the biggest guy, depending on what level you want to get to, if you are looking to play very competitively rather than socially, whatever club you go to there will always be an old prop there to help you out and guide you, they seem to pop up at every club and personally i think they are thrown in every time a club is founded.

Hope i helped

The game is pretty easy to learn. The first club I played for, none of us had played before, but we won our first game after about 3 training sessions.
The prop usually follows the ball around, like any forward. But they are only expected to get to every second one. In the scrums, they are the key for your team. The lower you get, the more power you get. In the first year I played, we had the smallest pack, but we had the best scrum because our props were the best.
