Chris: What makes a University education better than one from community college?
I’m trying to decide where to go to college, and i’ve been accepted to state universities, but am temped to go to community college because of the large price of a state university. I would transfer to a University in a couple of years.
What exactly is the difference between education from community college as opposed to a state university? Is it any better at a University, considering that it’s twice the price? Will it effect my ability to get a job after college at all?

Not much of a difference, at least for the first 2 years. Just keep your grades up in a community college so you can transfer to a good state school. Employers will only see where your degree was from, which would be from the school you graduated from, not transferred from.
The credits you would receive at a community college for the first two years equate to that of a university because most community colleges offer the same exact general education requirements.
Most beneficial is the price of a community college. Why go to a university for the first two years of school to get the same credits for a whole lot more money?
However, you must eventually go to a university to finish your degree, bottom line. A college education on an application looks excellent, and if you want to pursue grad school, a bachelors degree is usually a requisite.
So if you plan on transferring, I say go to the community college first. And no, it will not hurt your image with prospective employment. What they will see is that you have a bachelor’s degree from univesity ‘X’ in discipline ‘Y’.
Answer by Longhorn10well if you transfer from the community college to the 4-year institution it should not really affect you since you did obtain a degree from the higher institution. Just know that when you do transfer, the 4-yr school will be much more rigorous and also make sure if you go to the cc that you get advice from the 4-yr institution you want to go to, to see what classes will transfer and the classes you need to take for whatever degree you are pursuing. I have some friends that took courses that did not transfer to certain degrees (i.e. art history for an engineering degree)
Personally I think the 4-yr institution will serve you better in the long run so there is no shock when you transfer and see how much harder it is. I go to UT-Austin during the year, and do my basics (history, govt, english, etc) in the summer, and I can say they are much more watered down compared to the coursework I do at UT. To answer your question, if you only got an associates degree from a cc, it would not look too good, but if you transfer to a 4yr school, it should not hurt your chances of getting a job after graduation. The only thing it would affect would be things like if you wanted to go to medical or law school. Just remember to make sure you are taking the correct classes and that they WILL transfer.
Best of luck and don’t forget to apply for scholarships!
