There are several levels and types of accommodation.
Hotel – these have western and Japanese style rooms. Prices range from 8,000 yen/night to more than normal people would ever pay. An average Tokyo hotel will cost between 12,000 – 20,00 yen/night A “business hotel” like Toyoko Inn with very small rooms and basic facilities will be closer to the 8,000 yen price point.
Ryokan – a Japanese style hotel in a traditional setting with tatami floors and futon. These rooms often come with dinner and breakfast included. With meals they are priced per person and range from 10,000 yen upwards per night. The higher the price, the better the food or the more historic the building.
Minshuku – a B&B style accommodation, sometimes in someone’s home, sometimes in a purpose-built place. Quality varies and there aren’t too many in Tokyo – mainly you will find them in smaller towns and tourist destinations.
