What kind of photography camera is good for a beginner?

Waverly: What kind of photography camera is good for a beginner?
I’m a beginner. I’ve used and fiddled with an SLR camera before, and I do know a thing or two about photography, but I’d rather start with a more simple camera for my own. I do have a price limit; about $ 400. I would like to get a Nikon or Canon since I know those are the preferred cameras for beginners. Any other information would be super useful. Thanks!

Nikon D70 easily, it’s an amazing camera, and it’s cheap! 😀

There are no DSLRs you can buy new for $ 400. You can buy a used DSLR for under $ 400, though. I own a used Nikon D70 with a AF Nikkor 35-70mm lens. Works great. I bought a new lens for it and it works amazingly.
