lala…: What camera for photography would you recommend for beginners?
I’m currently 13 years old and going to be 14 in a few months, and I want to start photography as a hobby. I don’t know which camera to buy and use. I’d like one preferably under $ 350 since that’s all I can afford for now.

A Nikon D70s is around 200.00 used, and a lens is another 100.00. It’s a good camera, solid build, and lots of room to learn with.
Make sure to use Opanda to check shutter count.

A digital SLR (DSLR) with a decent lens would be ideal. However–you can use a non DSLRs like “point-and-shoots” (many of which are in your price range) as long as they have a “full manual operation mode” in addition to the program modes that come with them.
Find a syllabus for any photography classes your school may offer. The minimal recommended gear you need are usually listed–sometimes good places for students to buy them are too.
As others have posted here, you can get good deals on used cameras–just make sure you’re able to “test the goods” before you fork over your hard-earned money. If there are any reputable camera stores (and I tend to shy away from the mall chain camera stores) you can often find good deals on “starter SLR kits.”
I’ve also seen decent kits at Costco (of all places) and Best Buy–which are ideal for beginner photographers.
IMO, the most important tools/skills for a beginner photographer to have are 1) curiosity, 2) willingness to visually experiment and study/learn from the work of others, 3) ability to self-critique and accept constructive criticism of their work from other photographers and 4) a decent camera, lens and tripod.
Notice how I put the camera, lenses & tripod last. Hope this helps, and good luck!
